Dear Metropolitan LMSC Members,

Please be advised that the USMS registration fee for 2008 will be increasing by $7, from $31 to $38.  This dues hike is largely driven by the national registration fee increase.

At the 2006 USMS National Convention, a $5 increase for 2008 was approved.  The additional funds are slated to be used for the newly-hired Executive Director, the Editor of our national publication, and other professional positions. This increase in professional staff and leadership, we hope, will result in direct improvements for our members, including the advent of the long-awaited on-line swimmer registration system which is scheduled to be implemented later this fall.

On the local LMSC level, we feel it is necessary to increase our USMS registration portion by $2. We have gone through two postage rate hikes and inflationary increases in all of our operating expenses since we last raised the Metro portion of the registration fee and also anticipate an insurance premium increase.  The increase in these expenses, combined with a decrease in our membership numbers, is enough cause for concern for our long-term financial health to warrant this modest $2 increase.

In the event that the national organization does not offload additional insurance costs to the LMSC, we will redirect the funds towards the improvement of local competitive events and target those with a high level of anticipated member participation.
